Hello,
I am new to the forum and am looking for support on an issue I'm experiencing.
I recently moved near some family that have a pre-teen diagnosed with OCD. This family member has become quite attached to me and I'm beginning to feel that this attachment is unhealthy. I believe that part of the issue is that his OCD makes it difficult for him to maintain friendships with kids his age, and interacting with an adult that is empathetic and able to adapt to his restrictions makes socializing less stressful for him. I understand his limitations; however, I feel that he is channeling too many social expectations on me because he lacks interactions in other areas of his life. When I visit, he spends hours discussing plans we should make for the future and trying to convince me to stay longer than I had planned. Further, I feel that his parents are so excited that he is engaging with someone that they are fostering this obsession.
I have my own issues with anxiety and need a lot of personal space. I have fairly low tolerance for extreme attachment and end up avoiding interaction, but doing so only seems to make him more anxious to see me.
Does anybody have any experience in this area? Is it possible for OCD to present preoccupations with people? Is there a healthy way to detangle from this?
This might be because of other issues he has, and not as directly OCD related as I'm assuming, but if it is, I would very much appreciate any insight and advice.
Thank you!
