Can't sleep, upper back muscle strain

Hi, I pulled a muscle in my upper back, not sure how I did it. I think our mattress is to blame though -- it's getting lumpy and I know we should get a new one soon. Anyway, in the meantime, I can't find a comfortable way to sleep. I wake up at 2 or 3am in pretty considerably amount of back pain. Nothing I do throughout the day aggravates those muscles as much as simply sleeping -- flat, on my back -- and I fear this strain won't heal unless I can find a new way to sleep.

As I said, I already sleep pretty flat on my back with only one low, firm pillow under my head. I've tried using an even firmer wedge pillow but it's so uncomfortable (in a general, non-back-related sense) that I have a hard time falling asleep using it. I tried making a little pallet for myself on the floor, composed of a yoga mat on a hardwood floor topped with several layers of sheets and throws to soften it up a bit, but even though that was pretty comfortable falling asleep I still woke up in even more pain than usual around 2am. Part of the problem is that my spine juts out a bit in the middle. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can sleep through the night while this strain lasts? Thanks!
