Hi folks. Back in 2010/11 I developed adult onset asthma. No idea why/how. All I treated it with was a rescue inhaler. Never went for official tests or used a corticosteroid puffer. I got out of a toxic marriage in 2012, and within a couple months, my asthma went away...I got rid of the inhaler. So it seems it was caused or triggered by stress. Then like an idiot, in 2013, I started smoking - for about a year. I got a cold, which turned into bronchitis. I immediately quit smoking. Then about a year ago, I smoked a bunch of cigarettes, got sick again (bronchitis), and my ******* asthma came back (my own fault, I know).
I've not smoked (except for that one night) for 2 years. But my asthma has been getting worse. Stress has been high as we are in a recession, and there are constant layoffs. I used to get wheezy/tight chested only at night - now it's the daytime as well, and now I cough badly before an attack. It's a productive cough - sometimes the sputum is yellow/green, sometimes not. It's not an infection...I am fine otherwise. The cough will come on out of nowhere, followed by wheezing and difficulty breathing. It's intense.
I went for a physical last week, and my chest was clear (I had used the rescue inhaler before I went). The Dr prescribed me a steroid inhaler - which I just filled this morning. I also have a chest x-ray next week to be safe.
Anyway, a couple questions. Is the steroid inhaler a lifelong thing? Why would my asthma come out of nowhere, go away for a couple years, then come back? The bronchitis I'm guessing? The productive cough - is that common? Can this be a dust mite allergy or some other allergy? Will the steroid inhaler reduce my need for the rescue inhaler (I'm using that like 5-6 times a day/night) now).
Any other insight? Thanks you!
