Blood Pressure Medications and Side Effects

I tried for about two years to make a single anti-hypertenstive work. Unfortunately, one med alone does not seem to be able to control my blood pressure. My doctor put me on an angiotensin II receptor blocker PLUS hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ). I have only been on the combination for about 10 days and in that time I've experienced:
  • Reduced sexual function (not completely gone)
  • Nausea
  • Increased trips to the bathroom for both No. 1 AND No. 2
  • Drowsiness

I am going to see my doctor tomorrow morning, but what I'm hearing her nurses tell me is that "That's all the options she has." But what I cannot get a straight answer to is whether or not these side effects will reduce in time and why she is so unwilling to try other drug combinations. I know that not all patients can tolerate a diuretic like HCTZ, so do they just not get to control their blood pressure? I understand that it is typical for a doctor to say that certain classes of drugs work in the majority of patients, but when are doctors going to realize that each patient is an individual and that "one size fits all medicine" is part of the huge healthcare problem we have in this country?

If I could get a straight answer that, "Yes, in the 4-6 weeks most of your symptoms should improve and if not "we will re-evaluate," then I'd be happy, but my doctor confuses me in her clinical decision making and her lack of transparency.

Does anyone else have any experience with HCTZ or another diuretic that could prove useful to me? Thank you.
