This week, I was diagnosed with PTTD and Plantar Fasciitis. I have seen two doctors in the last month trying to get to the bottom of my foot and ankle pain. The short version of the story is popping in my arch with burning, swelling in the ankle, flat feet, lots of pain. I have had several injuries over the years but this last year has been unbearable.
The first doctor, a foot and ankle orthopedic surgeon, put me in the Arizona brace and said live with it, the surgery is invasive and recovery is lengthy. The second doctor, a podiatrist, said throw the brace away and have the surgery.
Surgeon 1 said I would need the PTT tendon transfer with the heel bone cut and re positioned. He said he would use the tendon from the little toes. There was no mention of plantar fasciitis. He also said I would never run again and that I would do well to walk. I do not like this doctor. He made me cry.
Surgeon 2 said I would need PTT cleaned up or replaced. He was unsure how much repair the tendon would need because the MRI was not conclusive. He would use the tendon from the big toe. He said I did not need the heel bone cut and re-positioned because I do not have deformed feet. He also said that I would have gait problems because of the previous injuries to my knee, pelvis, and back. Then the doctor said that I needed a plantar fascia release, as that was why my foot was popping in the arch and burning. He also had me feel different areas of the arch where knots could be felt. He said that is scar tissue from the tears.
I am nervous. I elected to go with Surgeon 2 and his plan, partly because I like him better, but also because his plan made more sense to me. So that brings me to my questions. Has anyone ever had the PTTD surgery without the heel bone being re-positioned? Has anyone ever had the PTTD surgery with a plantar fascia release? Lastly, any advice for this scary road I am looking at heading right now?
