I've been experiencing really bad heartburn for about 3 years now. My doctor cycled me through a bunch of medication to control it including lansoprazole, rabeprazole, Omeprazole and Ranitidine. They helped but nothing took it away completely. Eventually my doctor sent me for an endoscope which showed that I had a 3cm hiatus hernia. I was told it wasn't bad enough for surgery and that I should take Lansoprazole for 6 months. I discussed the results with my doctor as I had already tried Lansoprazole and it didn't work. She put me on a combination of Ranitidine and Rabeprazole twice a day which seemed to get it under control.
The past couple of weeks I've had constant heartburn even though I'm still taking my medication. I'm not eating or drinking anything spicy/fizzy/acidic/dairy so I don't think it's my diet that's making things worse. I don't drink caffeine either. What could be causing this heartburn? Could my hernia have gotten worse/bigger? Has anyone else experiences constant heartburn while taking the correct medication? My doctor suggested drinking gaviscon between tablets but it makes me feel ill.
Any advice welcome.
