Hi All!
After having my L5 S1 fusion 2 years ago, I can honestly say it has been life changing, and I am currently in the best shape of my life. A brief history of myself and my lovely back goes a little like this. Age 14 back pain starts, age 18 first discectomy, age 22 2nd surgery, age 25 3rd surgery, and the last, age 29 spinal fusions. I can say at the least the past 17 years has been filled with a lot of pain mentally and physically, as most of you know what Im talking about. I have always been extremely active so for the periods where I was hurt, it was very tough for me to just sit around and watch the tube.
After having the fusion in June of 2014 I was a little unsure about it, before and after the surgery. I tried to avoid it for the 4 years after my last discectomy. The last surgery did not help at all, the disc eventually degenerated, and caused some serious nerve damage in both my legs. Trust me this was not enjoyable! I talked to several people before having the fusion done to get a real incite on how the pain was and how active they were after the surgery.
There were many factors to everyone's success after surgery. I talked to people who were doing ok, who were in constant pain, and who were doing great. I did notice that there was one common factor in the healing process. Mindset!
I can honestly say I was on the path to not doing so well after the surgery till I had some inspiration from a few patients. They told me to change my mind, starting moving, and stop feeling sorry for myself. If you really want to heal you will! So that's what I did. I started exercising regularly and never gave up, and haven't missed a day of my routine since I was told I could start moving again.
I following a great weight lifting and cardio plan. I have done some serious research, and testing (on myself) to see what movements I could do with no pain, and which movements were big no no.
What I would really like to do is give back to the community, post spinal fusion and help people get back into shape if not in the best shape of there lives. Starting from the mental process all the way through the exercises to be doing and to be avoiding, and full on routines for different cases. As being someone that has a lot of experience with this, I think I can really help others.
I'm looking to get some feed back here if anyone would be interested in this? Or is this too far fetched, and most people are just accepting there pain and discomfort as the way it is. I can honestly say that when I take a few days off from my routine I start to feel stiff and pain increases. Moving is key!
Any feedback is greatly appreciated, as well as reading this long post.
I thank you all!
Bruce
