Bleeding external hemorrhoid

I'm 43y.o. Had one of these about 4 years ago. hurt like hell. Saw MD. She told me to do the usual sits, diet, etc. bled for a few days, then felt fine. Came back last thursday. started to bleed 2 days ago. Starting to feel better. I assumed that the bleeding was normal and part of the heeling process, but now I'm wondering if there is a guideline of how long to let the bleeding go before consulting a MD? Is some bleeding normal?
