supporting someone with ED

My BF and I have recently moved to the intimacy level. He has issues staying erect for penetration. We are in our 50's and he hasn't be intimate with anyone for just over 2 yrs. He's going to see his Dr. But I need some advice on how to support him in the mean time, This bothers him deeply and I don't want to say anything to make matters worse and let him know I'm supportive and while intimacy is important to me, I'm not bailing on him. Any ideas, what to say? not to say?
I've been able to help him climax in other ways, but penetration is the main issue.
