Blood Pressure when the Nurse won't touch ya

I was taking Valsartan for about 18 months when I went in for my annual physical. The nurse would not touch me -- she did not hold my arm, so I held it up thinking I was doing the right thing. The reading was 140/90 (a little too perfectly imperfect if you ask me) and the doctor, without asking me about recent readings, added another med that started a big old fuss.

After spending some time dealing with side effects from Valsartan HCTZ, she agreed to try Micardis (by itself). So, my question is, if the nurse won't hold my arm, is it okay to support it with my other arm by placing the testing elbow in the palm of my other hand? That way, you know, the muscles aren't tense.

I also saw another post about cuff anxiety and how one person decided that "the little evil device" won't control his life. I need that. My first readings are often high and I feel anxiety in my gut. The feeling leaves and the second number, especially on my new meds, is below 140/90 (often 120s/80s). My wife says that I'm stressing myself out over it. Yes I am, but I cannot stop. If I go back to the doctor in a few weeks and my numbers are bad the doc may very well insist I go back on an ARB/HCTZ combo.

I think the biggest thing I need to realize in life is that I cannot control a lot of things. My blood pressure (without meds or some effort), how other people are going to behave toward me, the nurse who won't old my arm, etc. I'm actually scheduled to see a counselor in a few weeks to see about controlling anxiety without meds. We'll see how that goes.
